Firstly, "first law of thermodynamics" does not apply to electricity. That law implies a consequence: "Energy can be neither created nor destroyed," - it's just a consequence, not applicable to the entire physical universe.
Second, David Cohen-Tanugi did not mention the problem: Why do generator motors that use the force of magnetism not work?
Knowing the cause, there will be a solution. David Cohen-Tanugi knows why, because he is active in the field of science. But he did not mention the "why" issue.

In addition to friction, gravity, magnet resistance, ... makes the magnetic generator inactive, there is a cause: EMF (Electromotive force) come back.
Jim Murray discovered how Tesla proposed, and Joseph Newman developed a new theory for permanent magnets, describing the operation of Joseph Newman's magnetic generator as follows:
Joseph Newman’s motors all consist of a very powerful permanent magnet which rotates or oscillates in or near a coil with a very large number of turns of copper wire. The coil is energised by a battery pack, and the magnetic field produced by the coil provides the force needed to move the permanent magnet. A mechanical switching device or “commutator” reverses the direction of current flow through the coil every half cycle, and in some models, it also cuts off the current input between the current reversals.
It is very difficult to amplify power up to 5000% - this is the difference between Jim Murray and the rest. However, you can still make your own generator easily with a good plan, even if it doesn't reach 5000%.

The main difference between Joseph’s designs and previous motors is one of scale as Joseph uses very large coils and very large ceramic magnets weighing up to 700 pounds. His smaller motors use powerful rare earth magnets and the coils are wound with 100,000 turns of copper wire. This creates a very high coil resistance and the battery pack voltages are correspondingly high, being in the hundreds to thousands of volts range.
The torque or turning power applied to the magnet in these motors is proportional to the magnet strength, the number of turns in the coil and the current flowing in the coil. In Joseph’s motors, very large torques can be developed by very small currents. In one demonstration, a motor running on 3,000 volts at 0.8 milliamps has such power that it is not possible to stop the motor by holding its two-inch (50 mm) diameter shaft, though the current can be raised by trying to stop it, to 3 milliamps, or nine watts of power.
Joseph’s motors are different in other ways. If fluorescent tubes are connected across the motor coil, they light up due to the coil’s collapsing magnetic field each time the current direction is switched. These fluorescent tubes are used to protect the mechanical switch from arcing damage. The additional power produced in these tubes is at a very high frequency of 10 to 20 MHz. This radio-frequency current has been accurately measured and it exceeds the battery input current by a factor of five to ten times in the different motors. The measured current and voltage were in phase, indicating a real power output.

Did Nikola Tesla invent free electricity?
ReplyDeleteNikola Tesla is a Serbian - Croatian (not American just like not Austrian) inventor, a hero, a god and an immortal legend. He invented alternative current and wireless energy. He learned to capture and store energy from lightning bolts, so yes, it was free. He also invented the telephone and the lightbulb and Thomas Edison is a fraud who claimed some of Tesla's inventions as his own.

DeleteI could state any visionary theory, wouldn't it be cool if ... But then it comes down to turning that visionary theory into something real.
I could literally write a book of unanswered questions regarding Tesla's "free power" ideas. But I am not trying to make this answer a science lab discussion. The fact that there are so many questions that need to be answered about the details of Tesla's "free power" shows that Tesla's theories were far from a finished product, and are still very far from a working system.
On the internet, and especially on Quora, Nikola Tesla has become a larger than life mythological cult hero. Many of the theories that Tesla proposed were not unique to Tesla. The idea of transmitting electricity through the air was proposed by other inventors of Tesla's day.
The Tesla fanboys will tell you that Tesla invented radio. No one single person should be called the inventor of radio because there are many people that contributed to the overall system we now call radio.
You have already answered the main question with the second question," if Tesla's methods were viable, why wouldn't someone have picked them up." That is indeed a very good point.
Tesla worked for Westinghouse to win the War of Currents over Edison. There was a mutual respect between Westinghouse and Tesla. George Westinghouse was working on AC power distribution before he met Tesla. Once he saw Tesla's inventions he recognized they would be valuable to furthering the cause of AC power distribution. Westinghouse paid Tesla for his patents, and had Tesla work for him to implement his ideas into the distribution system that Westinghouse was building.
Westinghouse Electric was a major player in radio technology. The Westinghouse broadcasting companies powered some of the first radio stations in America. The current American television network CBS has its roots in the Westinghouse broadcasting companies.
Just a food for thought question, if "Nikola Tesla's wireless power" theories had any great value, why wouldn't Westinghouse have developed them?
The Tesla fanboys throw out the point for why investors did not support Tesla's idea, "Where will you fix the meter if you transmit electricity wirelessly?" Oh, I don't know, how did radio become such a large industry when all you were doing was transmitting sound wirelessly? Where did we fix the meter for all this free radio we were transmitting through the air?
Tesla's "free power" ideas that were attached to the Wardencliffe project were never anything more than just a dream. We could second guess all the "what if" scenarios of how Tesla could have done it better, done it differently, but the bottom-line is, it never became a working system.
Nikola Tesla is one of the most tragic figures in the history of science, a history that is practically filled to the brim with tragic figures. Francis Bacon, a 16th century philosopher and scientist, caught pneumonia and died because he was trying to stuff snow into a dead chicken. Marie Curie died as a result of her long-term exposure to radioactivity, and her papers from the 1890s are too radioactive to touch without protective gear to this day.
DeleteSo saying that Nikola Tesla is one of the most tragic figures in the history of science is a pretty bold claim, though most will agree that he lived up to it. Tesla was responsible for a huge number of inventions ranging from alternating current to vertical take-off planes.
The biggest problem people have today with all Tesla’s ideas, they do not align with the academia teaching. One should realize Tesla was never taught the science being taught today, thus many of his innovations reside outside the current academia science. Even during Tesla’s time, the science did not align with his experiments. Today’s teaching does not limit just Tesla, the list is huge. If people today try to apply what they were taught to what Tesla was doing, it is quite obvious to even a second grader - they don’t fit!

Personally, I would give Tesla more credit than what is being taught today for a host of reasons. One being this taught science cannot explain a real experience I and 13 other USAF personnel witnessed 60 years ago; a radar target performing feats beyond even common sense; this is just one of many. Another extremely important one today for both you and I is in researching Antoine Priore. What I am alluding to, Tesla was never the problem, he just got caught in the wake and was drowned. He tried to tell them a century ago, they got it wrong; talking to academia’s arrogant men was like talking to a bunch of monkeys. One cannot just tell people they are wrong when ‘they’ think they know it all; it just doesn’t work - then or today!
Where the real problem lies
The academia is teaching only a subset of what Electrodynamics is about. Much of our science today is based upon electrodynamics, and if we do not have it right then we are playing with only half a brain. How could we have gotten out here on this tangent? The real guru of electrodynamics was James Clerk Maxwell; he wrote a Treatise in 1865 on Electricity and Magnetism which became the bible for this science. A couple of major problems evolved from Maxwell’s ideas and where we are today yielding the reason for the subset. First Maxwell was smarter than any of his counterparts, they could not figure out his equations, thus the needed logic. Secondly, Maxwell was using aether, which today is tabooed by the academia. Many have tried to decipher the mathematics, and they came up with something similar; believing sort of like near-beer being the same thing as real beer!
Everybody is NOT using academia’s science
After researching how any radar target could performed feats outside both the academia science and even common sense, I believed the target was man-made and piloted by a human. Nothing could have performed those events inside our spatial world, it had to been outside, in a different dimension. I believe today this was a problem Maxwell had, Tesla ran into, and others when a phenomenon happens that cannot be explained in a physical and logical manner.
This phenomenon answers how the radar target did it, how Antoine Priore’s system of allowing any animate body to heal themselves, numerous natural phenomena to be occurring, etc. This non-physical intelligence opens up a whole new world for humans to discover.
Concluding
I do not think any of Tesla innovations have ever been ignored, the folks having the papers and other material Tesla left behind have been using them outside the public domain. Most of what Tesla worked on would have caused a huge disruption to the world in both economy and knowledge; the population was not ready for it back then. The way we are acting today (sickening) we are a long way from using it now. We need to get our act together first!
